Um Die Ecke | Summer Sojourns into the Bavarian Fairytale

Originally published by Wanderous Affair Magazine of Toronto, Canada

Nestled in the storybook landscapes of Bavaria lies a verdant, toylike town rife with history and culture. Munich - or München in German - is a town unfettered by eras, where Gothic spires and Baroque steeples compete for admiration along the low-slung skyline and locals chuckle at the notion that farm-to-table is a modern trend. This overgrown village, where every historical marker is a stones-throw from the last, also happens to be my overgrown village, and the perfect spot for day trips and staycations.

Amsterdam, a city just as well known for its drug use and prostitution as it is for Van Gogh and Vermeer, is delved into by voyager Laura Eberschveiler. Our writer explores why this medieval fishing village with its historically straight-laced society became a lauded sanctuary for such radically divergent subcultures… and gives advice on the best coffeeshops to visit outside of Amsterdam’s Red Light District, of course.

Maybe some of you are going through some version of this too. Whether your partner’s family comes from a different country or is just radically different from your own, holiday get-togethers can be relentless rounds of culture shock and ill-ease. But they can also be amazing…
